A useful manufacturing handoff connects the design to the people who will source, fabricate, assemble, inspect, and test it. Solder helps teams prepare the agreed files and coordinate prototype-build questions so the next step is clear.

Prepare PCB design files, BOM, fabrication and assembly outputs, sourcing questions, and prototype validation responsibilities for a clear manufacturing handoff.

## Facts

- Design outputs: Agreed fabrication and assembly package
- Supply inputs: Parts list and sourcing constraints
- Build plan: Prototype quantity and validation ownership

## Define the build package before sending files

The receiving manufacturer needs a consistent revision and the information required for its process. Agree which fabrication, assembly, and parts-list outputs are included, along with any special instructions. Editable design files are a separate part of the project handoff and should also be specified.

- Keep the BOM and board outputs on the same revision.
- Identify assembly variants and unpopulated components.
- Confirm required output formats with the selected supplier.

## Address sourcing before the build becomes urgent

An available design is not the same as an available set of components. Check critical parts, packages, acceptable alternatives, and sourcing restrictions early. If a substitution is proposed, review its electrical, mechanical, software, and footprint implications before approving it.

- Identify long-lead or difficult-to-source parts.
- Record who approves substitutions and purchases.
- Compare complete build plans rather than board-fabrication time alone.

## Choose a prototype quantity that supports learning

The first batch should support the tests, assembly checks, and stakeholder evaluation needed for the next decision. Manufacturing speed, cost, shipping, and component availability may pull in different directions. Agree those tradeoffs and avoid treating a pilot order as automatic approval for a larger run.

- Define what the first units must demonstrate.
- Plan inspection and functional testing responsibilities.
- Keep time and budget for findings that require a revision.

## Close the loop from supplier questions to tested hardware

Manufacturing can expose missing information or ambiguities in the package. Track supplier questions and approved changes so they reach the editable design as well as the production files. After assembly, record test results against the exact build and use them to decide whether to revise or increase quantity.

- Maintain a record of approved production changes.
- Assign bring-up and system-level test ownership.
- Update the design source before the next order.

## FAQ

### Does manufacturing support include making the boards in-house?

The manufacturing model and supplier responsibilities should be specified in the engagement. Support can involve preparing outputs and coordinating external fabrication, sourcing, and assembly rather than operating a factory.

### Can you help choose between domestic and overseas manufacturing?

The choice can be assessed against sourcing restrictions, supplier capability, component availability, shipping, cost, and the required schedule. Actual supplier quotes and build details should drive the decision.

### Are manufacturing lead times included in design turnaround?

They should be stated separately. Design, review, component procurement, fabrication, assembly, shipping, and testing are different steps, and the project schedule should identify which are included in each estimate.
